An Unexpected Detour

So on Sunday I took the one hour and ten minute ferry ride from Guernsey to Jersey and despite the overcast skies, the trip across the channel was pretty darn smooth.  Once I arrived in the port of St. Helier, Jersey, I grabbed a cab, dropped off my luggage and took a stroll around the nearby streets.  Now because it was Sunday, most everything was closed, but I was able to hop on Le Petit Train (similar to what I took in Guernsey) for a 45 minute one way trip to the nearby town of St. Aubin.

The trip took me along the waterfront of St. Aubin’s Bay past Elizabeth Castle and along the old railway route that once connected St. Aubin to St. Helier.

We passed numerous waterfront homes, the old railway station, the First Tower, which was a former watchtower built in 1787, Coronation Park (including some Jersey cows grazing nearby), and Fort Aubin sitting out in the bay, before reaching St. Aubin.

I ended up walking around the little town where there was a number of shops and restaurants open (unlike St. Helier) and was able to find a Christmas ornament before jumping on the train at 1:00 for the trip back to St. Helier.

By the time we were back at St. Helier, I could check in so grabbed my luggage and after unpacking took a nap.  At around 5:00, I woke up and rushed to the bathroom.  Now I won’t go into details, but I had a colonoscopy about two weeks before I left and was suddenly bleeding.  After about 4 hours off and on, I called a cab and went to the emergency room.

Long and short is that they believe the site of the polyp that was removed was bleeding.  I was admitted to the hospital and here I sit almost two days later.  The bleeding has stopped, however, I lost a fair amount of blood and my red blood cell count is very low so they plan to keep me here at least until Thursday.

Now this presents a problem as I was supposed to fly on Wednesday (tomorrow) from Jersey to Nice.  After discussing the issue, I decided to cancel my trip to Nice, including all my tours in Nice as well as my hotel reservation (fortunately all refundable).  I will, however, lose the cost of my flight from Nice to Barcelona (Easy Jet does not provide refunds, but that is the tradeoff for the cheap ticket.). I am going to change my BA flight from Jersey to Nice to Jersey to Barcelona.  Nice and Monaco will have to wait until another time.

I also cancelled all of the tours I booked in Jersey and the tour companies were kind enough to fully refund me.  I may be able to rebook the two tours for Friday and Saturday if they discharged me on Thursday.  And the hotel packed up all my stuff and sent it over to the hospital.  I can go back on Friday (presuming I am discharged that day.)

So that is the update for now.  Not how I planned to spend this week, but nothing I can do about it.  Hopefully, I am out of here on Thursday and can salvage my trip to Jersey since Nice/Monaco are out of the picture.
